Lead as a Human Being not as a Human Doing

Leadership is not a rocket science. Sometime, a simple act would make a difference. Lois P. Frankel, in her book See Jane Lead: 99 Ways for Women to Take Charge at Work, told us about a nice experience where she asked the participants in one of her leadership workshops the following: name the people who made a significant difference in your life- teachers, parents, coaches, clergy, spouses, bosses and friends, and then to tell the group what made this person so effective.

The results included the below set of behaviors:

  • “Treated me as a human being, not just an employee”.
  • “Believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself”.
  • “Trusted me”.
  • “Was interested in my wellbeing, not just what was best for the company”.
  • “Went to bat for me”.
  • “Kept his or her words”.
  • “Stretched me by setting high expectations and giving me the tools to achieve them”.
  • “Asked for my opinion and listed to the answer”.
  • “Set a good example”.
  • “Was honest, would admit when he or she was wrong”.
  • “Kept me well-informed”.
  • “Didn’t punish me for making mistakes but gave me helpful feedback; both positive and negative”.
  • “Showed enthusiasm for his or her negative”.
  • “Was firm but fair”.

I am lucky that I have/had such leaders in my life. I am also thankful for the leaders who taught me, the hardest way, what dose the opposite of the above behaviors mean!
